People need to stop criticizing the impact technology has on a person, instead focus on its benefits.
The general argument made by Damon Darlin in his work, “Technology Doesn’t Dumb Us Down. It Frees Our Minds,” is that technology doesn’t make us dumb; instead it helps us work productively. Everything has its advantages and disadvantages including technology depending on how you use it. More specifically, Darlin argues that the invention of calculators is extremely useful. Certain Professors banned them from their classrooms fearing that their engineering students “would no longer understand the relationships that either penciled calculations or a slide rule” (Paragraph 9). In this article, Darlin is suggesting that these calculator helped engineers develop new technologies such as cellphones, iPods and other search engines. Furthermore, Darlin argues that all technologies scared people into thinking it would have a negative impact on everyone. He writes, “Socrates feared the impact that writing would have on man’s ability to think. The … printing…show more content… More specifically, I believe that new technologies shows us an optimistic way of thinking. For example, Engineers believe “Every problem can be solved if you have the right tools … and pose the correct questions” (Paragraph 13). Although some may object technology doesn’t give us a different mindset it just makes us dumber and it’s just a waste of time. I maintain that new technologies helps us become more optimistic because it give us hope that every issue has its own solution but you need the correct tools to prove it. With the use of new technology “engineers have brought us iPods, cellphones, high-definition TV and, yes, Google and Twitter” (Paragraph 10). Therefore, I conclude that with the use of new technology we are allowed to have a different mindset and work more accurately without it having a negative impact on our
