Socrates once said “The fear of death is indeed the pretense … and no one knows whether death which men in their fear apprehend to the greatest evil…” In short, that simply means why fear death when people don’t know anything about death. The topic itself is what fascinates many people around the world, and the question is why? In the article, “When Death is a Fascination”, Leah Sottile dives into the world of death and how people view it in different aspects. Sottile fails at appealing to the ethos with her lack of voice, meanwhile appealing to the logos, by bringing in some professional opinions, and to the pathos in the audience in a non-traditional way. The article explains how one man was able to start a movement (a group of people called the Death Hags) towards a topic as sensitive as death. Starting in 1997, Scott Michaels bought the domain, FindADeath.com, in order to post more information in regards to the death of celebrities. Over the past 18 years, the has grown from just a few to over 10,000. Sottile continues to explain how people want to see death happening, such as a crash or a murder, but only from the safety of our homes…show more content…
Sottile spends a majority of the article bogging the reader down with information. Though this information is useful such as, “‘“The fascination with viewing someone who is [dead] … is driven by that sort of supreme fear of ours which makes us want to know more and to understand the experience and feel like we have some kind of window in,’ [said by Saltz].” This can be applied to her use of pathos and logos but it does not appeal to her ethos. The article seems as though Sottile spent too much time focuses on the information and the studies that she found to put in her article and completely dismissed the part of putting her voice into the article. It completely lacks her opinion, thus causing the reader to no be able to connect with what she’s trying to convey and losing her
