The document is two letters sent from Joshua Wilson and Sally Wilson to explain to George Wilson what is expected of him as a young man living at the time. The letter written by Joshua Wilson George's father begins by acknowledging the subject is sensitive but he believes that George needs to think and pray on his desire to get married. Joshua then goes on to show that the intention of the father is not to restrain his son but to try and manage his desires and prevent his desires that are “vicious” from overpowering him, and causing him to go about finding a wife the wrong way. Joshua then gives the view that an honorable marriage is beneficial for the couple being married and that he should not rush a wedding because the father believes that “things are only beautiful and useful when they occupy their own time and place.” It is then pointed out that when marriages are rushed they run into problems quickly that will cause them to lose all enjoyment in life and their marriage. Like her father she asks him to think more upon the matter of marriage however she believes that he should not marry her if he will be unable to support her anymore than she is before he marries her. She then reminds him that he himself had said in a previous letter that he would not marry a woman if he was unable to support her. She then asks him to take into account how she now lives and to think about if she will be stepping down from a higher place in society to live with a poor man who cannot afford to house her comfortably and becoming a disappointment to her and the possibility that he is not who she expects since she has always seen him at his best.
