The story The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Stetson is about a common theme in today’s society, which is about marriage and self-expression. In today’s society, women are forced to obey their husbands to please them and keep a happy marriage. This happens mulitple times in the story. For example, the narrator was forced to stay in the “large and airy” room instead of the smaller and cozier room she preferred. Additionally, one of her favorite hobbies was to write, but John (her husband), told her that it was off limits. Forced to comply to these mental constraints, the narrator turns insane.
