Selene, the goddess of the night and the moon, was born to the titan Hyperion and his wife Theia. She is probably most famous for the number of affairs she had with the gods and mortals. "Some sources report that the Nemean lion, which fell to the earth from the moon, was the result of an affair of Zeus and Selene." (Encyclopedia Mythica 1) Selene's most famous affair was with Endymion. She was so in love with him that she asked Zeus's permission to make him immortal. He approved and, "The beautiful boy was granted eternal youth and immortality by Zeus and placed in a state of eternal slumber in a cave near the peak of Lydian Mount Latmos." (Theoi.com 1) After Endymion was placed into an eternal slumber, Selene gave birth to fifty of his children.
