Rich or Poor?
Imagine you are a Greaser. You work hard to keep your family together. You are poor and have to work. You are disrespected because of your looks. You carry a knife because you are constantly afraid. That’s how Greasers live. Between the Socs and the Greasers, Greasers have it worse. They have many problems that the Socs didn’t have. Greasers are poor and have many family problems. Socs are rich and have all they want. Greasers are indigent and have to work to get what they want. Socs are spoiled while Greasers are expelled. The Greasers are the group that struggles the most in S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders. The Greasers are meager and work hard to help their families. They take risks and put their family before themselves. “Darry was always pulling muscles; he roofs houses and he’s always trying to carry two bundles of roofing up the ladder”(p.16). This shows that Darry works hard at his job to earn money. This is important because Darry takes the risk of pulling muscles for his brothers. “He and Soda worked at the same gas station- Steve part time and Soda full time...”(p.9). This proves that Soda also works to help collect money. This is imperative because Soda helps Darry with money for Ponyboy’s sake. The Greasers didn’t have enough money. This proves that Johnny is never noticed by his parents whether he is at home or not. This is important because Johnny only feels noticed when he’s getting hit by his father. “Since Mom and Dad were killed in an auto wreck, the three of us get to stay together as long as we behave”(p.3). This shows that Ponyboy, Darry, and Soda’s parents had died when they were young. This is imperative because they only have each other and no parents. Some Greasers are beaten and others didn’t even have
