The play, “A Doll House” by Rolf Fjelde, tells the story of Nora. Nora is a wife to Torvald Helmer, a lawyer and they have three children. By reading the play, the reader is able to see how Nora deals with struggles in her life which leads her to leaving her husband and her kids because she wants to try to find and discover herself. The elements of fiction that I will be using are character and theme and these help in showing the real message of “A Doll House”: in the society that is taking place in the book, women have had to make a lot of sacrifices, something that men like Torvald, do not want to do.
Nora and Torvald have had their struggles and he has wanted to maintain her because he feels like he has to since he wants Nora to depend of…show more content… “Nora: Don't look at me like that” and Torvald says, “Helmer: Why shouldn't I look at my dearest treasure?--at all the beauty that is mine, all my very own?” (Doll act 3). The fact that she tells her husband to not look at her that way shows a little peek to what she feels. Here is shows that she feels like that her eight years were nothing but trouble that works only for Helmer not for her. He gets a beautiful toy and she is just being played with. The relationship takes a bad turn when Torvald reads the letters. He becomes mad and let down, but when there is a letter he is happy that her bond is back and it looks like he has forgotten about their problems. He forgives her then says something that most likely influences her to leave her husband. He expresses the joy it brings him to forgive her: “Helmer: It seems as if that had made her, as it were, doubly his own; he has given her a new life, so to speak; and she has in a way become both wife and child to him. So you shall be for me after this, my little scared, helpless darling” (Doll act 3). The whole theme is shown right here when Torvald speaks about Nora and his forgiving her. This is a highlight to what women oppression really is: when the man thinks that he is greater than the woman and that the woman should be completely dependent of him as if he were her protector.
