In the short story, “Making Do”, Roberta James lived a life filled with morose, but in the end she was “making do”. Roberta had three kids with three different men without marriage. Unfortunately, none of her kids survived; whom died at a young age or birth. Her biggest trigger to her breaking down emotionally, and mentally was her six-year-old daughter, Harriet. Out of all the kids she had, Harriet was the only one she could be an actual mother too. She starts to feel trapped. On the other hand, her grandmother’s wise words: “A woman can only hold so much hurt”, causing Roberta to realize grieving isn't the answer to anything. Pushing away her family, she decides to travel, running into her uncle. That would be the crux of the story where
