The man in this story is very oblivious to the cold around him. This has resulted in poor economic decisions. The incentives of his wants have blinded him from his needs.
In one of the coldest lands, one selfish man had let his wants over power his needs. The man needed warmth, waiting ground, and a traveling buddy. “It was the time to lie snug in a hole in the snow and wait for a curtain of cloud to be drawn across the face of outer space whence this cold came” (272). The man knew that he needed to wait for the cloud to pass, but he decided to move on. The dog also knew and had tried to stop him. “If he had only had a trail mate he would be in no danger now” (406). This quote shows that he was to ignorant to travel with a partner like the…show more content… He had made trade offs that were very dangerous to his well being. He had many decisions that he needed to make as like: keeping the biscuits on the outside of his shirt in a bag or under his shirt, taking a break to smoke from his pipe or continuing forward, listen to the dog or not be bothered by the wolf huskie. “The dog dropped in again at his heels, with a tail drooping discouragement, as the man swung along the creek bed” (139). The man did not know cold. The dog knew what cold was, he has it in his blood. He should have seen the way the dog was acting and followed suit or been more careful. If one had seen a dog being hesitant on going forward one would normally stop or carry on slowly. The good he had gave up was staying safe and resting or making a fire at that point. “When the man has finished, he filled his pipe and took his comfortable time over a smoke, then he pulled on his mittens, settled the ear flaps on his cap firmly about his ears” (261). The author had added a very good point in saying he took his comfortable time. This means that he gave up travelling time for a smoke that could have been valuable for building a fire or getting to the camp…show more content… The man in this story had minimum food, clothing, and matches for providing heat. “He succeeded in getting one, which he dropped on his lap” (458). As one sees in this quote, matches were becoming scarce. Each time he successfully lit a match it went out. He needed the heat of the fire to survive. HIs food supply was also little and had little to protect it. “AS for lunch, he pressed his hand against the protruding bundle under his jacket. It was also under his shirt, wrapped up in a handkerchief and lying against the naked skin” (71). If one had seen this quote i'm sure one would think of two ideas. The first would be that he had only two layers of clothing. This tells us that clothing was scarce and the man did not had nearly as much as he needed, especially because the weather was seventy five degrees under freezing point. Second, The man did not have enough food for his freezing journey. THe food the character did had was scarce and he had to protect what he did
