In Psychology, Science & the Seas, Dr. Ed Mendelowitz talks about the need for humanizing psychology in the effort to heal instead of resorting to mock exhibition of scientific gimmickry (Mendelowitz, 2010). Mendelowitz main contention is that the prevailing trend in psychological interventions has objectified the patient to the extent that in some instances the whole thrust of proffering remedy is negated. He points out that the sciences have been beset by the “fallacy of misplaced concreteness” which in turn increasingly engenders scientism (Mendelowitz, 2010) A big part of Mendelowitz’s focus in this article is the human element in psychology as a science. His main thought on this - “…attention of physician and psychologist to the anxiety…” - brings up an interesting point regarding the direction psychologists should take in administering treatment (Mendelowitz, 2010). Mendelowitz argues that venerating mindless technique infected with “hypertrophied systematization” in treating patients over the use of what he refers to as “real” psychology irrevocably objectifies the patients consigning them to a level of inhumanness (Mendelowitz, 2010). In his assertion, he observes that psychologists would be better served by viewing the patients as “suffering beings” and not machines prone to breakage.…show more content…
