People always say there is nothing compared to a mother’s love. In the poem “The Mother” by Gwendolyn Brooks, Brooks talks about a mother dealing with her decision to get abortions multiple times. The subject of abortion will always be a difficult and grim issue to talk about. Brooks uses tone and the way the speaker speaks to get the reader to see all the emotion that goes through a women’s mind after the decision to get an abortion. Brooks in her first lines says, “Abortions will not let you forget” (#). This first sentence sets the tone for the whole poem.
