Three years ago I came to a crossroads in my life. After working at a sought after, stable consulting firm I was faced with an incredibly difficult decision. Do I leave the secure, established company where I would eventually be promoted to consultant, or do I take a risk, and become, for $7000 less, employee number 17 at a little known, Chicago based startup? For many people, especially my supportive friends and family, it seemed like a no-brainer, stay in the secure job and move up the ladder one step at a time. For me though, this decision was complex.
