As William Faulkner once said in his banquet speech, “The poet’s, the writer's duty is to write about these things. It is his privilege to help man endure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past. The poet’s voice need not merely be the record of man, it can be one of the props, the pillars to help him endure and prevail.” In this short quote taken from Faulkner’s speech, he explains that the writer’s duty is not just to record, but to connect with man, to teach, help and educate others through sharing experiences of courage and compassion. In his text, King writes about his life while adding hints of writing tips and advice. In the excerpt from his text, King fulfills Faulkner’s “writer’s duty”, since he shares his knowledge of writing to the readers. He teaches us about how writing is about “enriching the lives of those who will read your work and enriching your own life.” King fulfills Faulkner’s writer’s duty by showing compassion and courage through his writing to show what being a writer is. In his memoir, he shares his difficult time dealing with drugs and alcohol. As he shares his life story with us, he also hints how writing is involved. He connects to the reader as he shares his own life story but also incorporating writing techniques and skills. He states, “In the end, it’s about enriching the lives of those who will read your work, and enriching your own life, as well. It’s about getting up, getting well, and getting over. Getting happy, okay? Getting happy. Some of this book--perhaps too much--has been about how I learned to do it.” As a writer himself, King teaches us that you do not simply write just to write or to make money, but to share knowledge and enrich others.
