In the poem “Miniver Cheevy” by Edwin Arlington Robinson the main character Miniver Cheevy has a very troubled life and blames himself for everything wrong and does not take action to try and fix his life. On the other hand the mighty Greek hero Ulysses, in Lord Tennyson Alfred’s poem “Ulysses”, blames his family for the life that he has once he gets home. Eventually, he gets tired of it and takes action and leaves his family for the thrill of adventure unlike Miniver Cheevy. He wants to be a knight at the round table, he loathed his real life. Everytime he comes out of his day dreaming spells he “cursed the commonplace/And eyed a khaki suit with loathing;/He missed the mediaeval grace” (21-23). Throughout the poem Cheevy curses his life and wants to escape it and become the hero he thinks he should be but he can only do this by day dreaming and drinking to give himself the false sense of being in the ancient times of knights and castles. Ulysses suffers from almost the same kind of depression of wanting to become the hero, except that he was actually a hero, he just wants to return to the life he once had. He really blames his depression on his family. His family bores him “Well-loved of me, discerning to fulfil” but he loves them but hates to be around them (35). He blames his life before kingship. His life before hand was full of monsters and evil supernatural creatures. Now his life is filled with the people of his city asking him for advice on minuscule laborious tasks. His family and his people cannot fill the hole in his adventurous heart that lacks the need to sail the great ocean and fight the gods and their supernatural
