Carl Brashear and Master Chief Sunday each display unique characteristics in certain instances of their lives; however, underneath the obvious differences lies similarities that each does not realize. The bitter rivalry between the two pits them against each other constantly. These head on, face-to-face confrontations that present themselves highlight their similarities and differences perfectly. Carl Brashear and Master Chief Sunday provide concrete examples of this in three important scenes of the movie. The first comes when Brashear stands patiently outside of dive school, the second occurs in a bar where the two start a heated competition and the last happens when Master Chief Sunday smashes Brashear’s radio. This brings to light the confrontationist mentality both share at the moment. Carl decides it would be a good idea to walk in with the Master Chiefs wife knowing the eyebrows it will raise. Obviously this bothers Sunday and rather than let it be, he creates a scene and speaks loudly to the both of them garnering the attention of the room. “You think you better than me?” says Chief Sunday “You’re damn right I am,” replies Brashear. The conversation escalates into a holding of breath contest. During this contest another similarity appears but for different reasons. Each man lets stubbornness push them through the contest, however, Chief Sunday does it to prove he’s still a great diver and Brashear pushes through to show his fellow marines he can hang around. The contest becomes too dangerous for Jo and Gwen to bear so they step out of the bar. To end the scene both men eventually walk away with the love of their lives. They show compassion after being so selfish in the competition that could have killed them.
