And not only did they have an unfortunate geography, but socially they were suffering as well. In the Qin Dynasty, they had very strict and harsh people governing the masses, so the masses were not being ruled through compassion, but through fear and punishment. With their people being scared of the government, this shows a level of distrust among everyone in the Dynasty because once their people are unhappy; the more the government can no longer control their people. If the officials and the peoples are not unified from within the Dynasty, then they are just more vulnerable to attack and invasion. Mark Edward Lewis makes a point by stating that China’s early geography and governing system was a contribution to the Period of Warring States
