Lorie Goldstein's Persuasive Speech

In Canada, every four years there is a federal election held. The 22nd and current Prime Minister of Canada is Stephen Joseph Harper, the Leader of the Conservative Party. It is election time once again and the citizens will decide who should lead them in the coming years. This is where Lorrie Goldstein of the Toronto Sun and Ryan Remiorz of The Canadian Press come in to sway the vote. On September 2, 2015 Goldstein published an article talking about Trudeau and if he is ready to be Prime Minister. On the other hand Remiorz published an article on September 21, 2015 talking about Harper’s backflip on the refugees. It is a much more unsatisfied and disappointed tone. He shows his disappointment when he mentions how, “Sadly, Harper could not resist indulging in the Big Lie…” (Ryan Remiorz). When he says the word, ‘Sadly’ the audience can tell how he feels about Harper through his tone. It is very different from how Goldstein is using sarcasm. This ties in with the fact that they both have a different target audience. Goldstein uses a more sarcastic type of tone because it would attract people with lower education level which is the target market she was going for while Remiorz uses a more developed and serious tone to attract the higher level audience. Goldstein uses a lot of rhetorical questions throughout her article. For example near the end of the article she says, “If you can’t do that, you shouldn’t be running for prime minister” and in her last line she says, “But the Prime Minister of Canada?” (Lorrie Goldstein). She also uses allusion in her article when she mentions, “Adolf Hitler’s Brownshirts and Benito Mussolini’s Blackshirts” (Lorrie Goldstein). On the other hand Remiorz does not use many rhetorical questions in his article instead he uses devices like personification and imagery. He uses personification when he talks about how, “sluggish government” (Ryan Remiorz) is. He also uses imagery at the very start saying how, “Grudgingly, and with an eye to the poll” (Ryan Remiorz). This further shows how the two articles are similar yet
