In "On the Subway," Sharon Olds brings two worlds into close proximity. Through his use of literary techniques such as imagery, organization, tone and other poetic devices Olds develops two portraits in the poem and as a result we are able to see the insight the narrator comes to because of his experience. Through imagery, Olds lets the reader know who the narrator is talking about and how the narrator is seen in contrast to the other person. "He has the casual cold look of a mugger, alert under hooded lids. he is wearing red like the inside of the body exposed. I am wearing fur." this lets us know that the narrator is eminent in their society; meanwhile the other guy is in a poor state of being. if he looks like a mugger than the guy has gone
