“ Her legs, he thought, were most certainly the legs of a virgin, dry and without hair…” (O'Brien 4). In the paragraph above, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross was dreaming about whether the woman he loved was a virgin or not. Throughout “The Things They Carried” there are many sexual references. "The Thing They Carried" is not recommended for anyone who cannot tolerate sex and profanity. However, the book should not be banned, as it teaches us about the Vietnam War and explains to us about the loss, sadness, and despair our soldiers experienced during that time. Since this book is a collection of true events, it most likely will contain bad language and sexual content. Aside from focusing on the negatives, there are a lot of positive we can learn from this book.

Cross thinks that this happened because he was not focused enough and now he must live knowing that he could have prevented the death of one of his closest companions and friend. It is now evident that O'Brien made clear why the book was important. As stated above the whole point of “The Things They Carried” was to educate us about the Vietnam war through different points of views. O'Brien does not argue about the politics of the Vietnam War. Instead, he makes comments about it. Before O’Brien was drafted into the war, he was still an author that has published nine books, including “Where Have You Gone, Charming Billy.”
“The Things They carried Was Never” has not actually been banned in more than one state, it however has been challenged not once but three times. The book was challenged in Illinois and Pennsylvania. Finally, it was banned in Mississippi. After reading the things they carried many people now can see the sadness behind the drafts and how pointless the war
