A movie can create positive and negative reactions from their viewers and most of the time the positive comments standout more than the negative comments. “Dear White People” a movie that is directed towards race is the first movie Justin Simien wrote, directed and co-produced. The movie gives those whose voices that are “often neglected with regards to the topics related to ethnicity” (Anonymous) something to state their opinion on. One of the main protagonist of the movie Sam, who has a group of black friends, and Coco and Tyler, who side with the white group of people go against each other about “authenticity, appropriate conduct and political strategy,” raising several questions on how society is being seen from people’s views (Scott). In return, people have started to bring history into the debate by saying that that’s not necessary because just like Sam said in the movie “Mass media from Fox News to reality TV on VH1 makes it clear what white people think of us.” Since the movie takes place where the president is Obama, people have created the thought that since Obama is the president, black people have more freedom. Although that is not how the Sam sees it. She makes a point saying that, Obama being the president hasn’t changed anything in the racism factor. In addition to Sam’s comment, a viewer’s comment points out that just because Obama is president, it doesn’t that mean racism against black people are “null and void” (mikeee). Justin Simien points out that just because the title is “Dear White People” it doesn’t mean it is to “rant to people” (Simien), Simien says “My film is about identity.” It’s about how the kids are living in a world where “covert racism occurs” (Simien) and it can be “difficult” (Simien) to find your place somewhere that you feel you don’t belong
