Restore the Peace Long ago, there were four nations live together peacefully: the Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads. Each nation can bend their own element means that they can control over it. Then, there is the avatar who can control all four elements. The avatar has to maintain the balance in the world. The “Avatar: The Last Airbender”, created by Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko is an American animated television series. It first aired on Nickelodeon back in 2005 and consisted of 61 episodes (each about 22 minutes). In the show, Aang, the avatar is a hero because he fit in pretty much all of the stages of a heroic journey cycle in Joseph Campbell’s article, “The Monomyth”. In the show, Aang is obviously the protagonist. 1 He is raised by monks at Nomads' Southern Air Temple, so he is against violence. This is irony because when the monk mistakenly reveal Aang true identity as an avatar before he turns 16 years old. This means that Aang, the avatar has to fight the bad guys (Fire Nation) to protect the innocent. 2 The fact that Aang is just a little kid and he doesn’t think he is ready for this type of responsibility driven him to ran away. He left the temple with Appa, a flying bison (avatar’s creature). It travels with Aang everywhere he goes. Unfortunately, there was a storm when they left. The storm cased both Aang and Appa to fall into ice water and they got trapped. 3 While Aang was in the ice water, he goes into what is call the avatar stage where he is much more powerful, but can’t control himself (basically he can not move). When Aang was in the avatar stage, there is an air bubble that trapped around him and Appa in an iceberg. This is what keep them alive. Aang will also get help from spirits (Zuko, avatar before him). Fast forward a hundred years later, Katara and Sokka from Southern Water Tribe found Aang and Appa and got them out. 4 Aang learned about the Fire Nation invasion other nations including Southern Air Temple. They killed all the monks (they were airbenders). So, Aang is the last airbender. He realized that need to become the avatar, master of all four elements, to be able to save everyone and also control himself when he goes into the avatar stage. 5 First of all, Aang had to learn how to waterbend. Sadly, the Fire Nation already wipe out all of the waterbenders in South Pole except Katara. Then, Aang along with Katara, Sokka, Appa and Momo (Aang’s pet) went to North Pole. They found
