As America broke away from Great Britain, the Continental Congress felt there needed to be a primary structure for their government. Therefore, the Articles of Confederation were introduced by the Continental Congress to solve the conflicts of the new nation by making the Northwest Ordinance, taking power away from Federal Government, and allowing them to sign an alliance with France. Even though the Articles of Confederation quickly became unpopular, they still helped to solve many conflicts among the new nation. The new nation’s biggest problem was the fight between the colonies over land. The colonies were struggling to figure out a way to separate their new land amongst the 13 colonies. The Continental Congress then adopted the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. The Northwest Ordinance established land in the Northwestern part of the new nation. After breaking away from a power government of Great Britain, the United States feared of their own powerful government. Therefore, the Articles of Confederation made it that the Federal Government couldn’t tax or supply troops. This seemed like a good idea for the people because it means they would not have to give money to the government. Since the new nation was coming off of a war, they were in extreme debt. Since the government wasn’t able to tax, the states had to tax their own people to pay for the nation’s debt. Limiting the Federal Government was good for the people because they could be represented by their states instead of having one person representing the entire country. This meant that people had more say because the representatives of each state had to listen to the people and vote based on what they wanted.
