Introduction Social workers are usually involved with creating conditions that promote the well being of a community by helping members of the society or groups attain or enhance their capacity to work and function socially. Their services are aimed at addressing social problems like drug abuse, poverty, illness and discrimination among others. Social workers are therefore required to understand a society’s social- economic and cultural activities, their interaction and impact on a given society. Social workers play a very important role in changing or transforming societies, with some doing outstanding work at different times on history. Ida. B. Wells-Barnett, Whitney .M. Young Jr. and Jane Addams are good examples of social workers who, in their time, did remarkable work to transform society. This paper will look at their work methodologies, philosophies and contribution to social work. Ida B. A graduate of the Rockford Female Seminary, Addams founded the Hull house settlement in Chicago, in collaboration with Ellen Star. The establishment of the Hull house was inspired by a visit by Addams and Starr to a similar settlement in London. (Hull-House Museum, 2009) The settlement mainly served new immigrants and poor persons within Chicago (Howlett, 2008). Addams also founded an international peace initiative in addition to other activities meant to uplift the status of women in society as well as address various social problems.
