Unlike most of the historians who divided history by ages, empires or wars, Tom Standage divided history by the era of development of different predominant beverages. In his book, “A History of the World in 6 Glasses”, Standage took his readers on a tour of the past, for a period ranging from the time when the humans on the earth started living settled life with the advent of agriculture to the 20th century. This is an interesting book which teaches important historical events with the history of development of everyday drinks and their growing popularity with time. The book starts with advent of beer in Mesopotamia and ends with advent of Coca-Cola in America and the author relates the political, social, and economic historical events of different periods with the dominant beverage of the corresponding period. The beverages discussed in the book are beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea and Coca-Cola and it’s interesting to notice that each of them have some or other type of stimulant: the first three have alcohol while the last three have caffeine.…show more content…
In fact, Standage changed the way of learning the ‘boring’ history in an entertaining manner by picking an edible subject, beverage, for digging up relevant historical anecdotes and factoids. The writing style of the author provided good insights and enabled them to access historical stories of human life.
