A small territory was procured from the Indians in 1809. This was called the twelve-mile purchase. This purchase added area to Wayne County and runs through what will be, Jefferson Township. Many people had begun to settle in this expanded area. In 1832, the town of Hagerstown was platted due to the increasing number of people settling in the area. In 1834, Jefferson Township was officially formed.
