Gladiatorial combat and contemporary football are both organized physical activities that involves participation, physical training and entertaining spectators, but, differ in some aspects. The modern society describes contemporary football as the modernized Gladiators. Evidence from the primary and secondary sources have provided enough information about the gladiatorial combat, during the Roman Era and contemporary football game. Gladiators were believed to had been originated from the Etruscans. Originally, gladiatorial combat was a private event, obligatory offering [munera], to honour a death in the family. Some sources suggests that within each gladiatorial school, it had large training area, like the arena, and facilities, like a small cell for housing, to accommodate gladiators. To be a gladiator, criminals, slaves and freemen had to learn physical combat skills, different fighting styles, and weaponry, particularly swords. Some sources suggests that gladiatorial training involved how to die, offered themselves to the other opponent with no fear and die with honour. Gladiators was often trained by retired professional gladiators, specifically skilled with combat and weaponry. Similarly, contemporary football athletes are trained by coaches, who were a retired football athlete or had some experience playing football. However, contemporary football athletes training does involved different plays and drills, but not combat and weaponry like the gladiators. In addition, trainings were held in football fields and gym facilities, with modernized equipment. Unlike contemporary football athletes, gladiators used wooden equipment for training.
