Muhammad Ali stood up against the masses by standing up for what he believed in; fighting for freedom and equality, against all fears. In the same way, David wanted equality as he grew up with the other telepaths, in The Chrysalids. Muhammad Ali fought off racism and trained his skills and body every day until he became the greatest boxer in the world. After winning many Golden Gloves and an Olympic medal, he was still rejected and discriminated when he returned to Louisville. This is similar to how Sophie was treated and rejected when she was sent to the fringes. Muhammad Ali refused to enter the army because of religious conflicts and did not budge no matter what he had to go through. Muhammad Ali ignored all racism and trained his skills and body every day as he grew up, becoming the greatest boxer in the world. As a result, he lost many loyal followers and fans, was fined loads of money, and was stripped of his titles, medals, and championship records. He was not allowed to fight and was sent to jail for five years. Many characters in the Chrysalids also had to suffer a lot for what they believed in. For example: Aunt Harriet suicide after trying to save her baby, and Sally and Katherine were tortured too. Three years went by before Muhammad Ali was released from jail. It took him four more years to win back his championships, and he finally retired on June 27, 1972. Soon after his retirement, he was struck by Parkinson's disease. Symptoms including shaking, rigidity, slowness of movement and difficulty with walking. He now donates his time, money, and reputation to charitable
