Flowers for Algernon Was Charlie Gorden better off before or after the surgery, and did Charlie deserve what he got in return for getting the surgery? Charlie Gordan lived his whole life mentally challenged, so when he got the chance to become smarter he took it. He had surgery done on him, and he became much smarter for a small period of time. After a while he began to loose his intelligence and went back to his old mentally challenged self. I believe this experience was very good for him in many ways.
