The F.A.T City video, really opened my eyes and made me realize how every learning disabled (LD) child learns in different ways. People easy think that students only go through the trouble with a learning disability at school, but a learning disability doesn’t just affect them at school it impacts them everywhere they go. In this video, they got a group of adults and students and put them in a room to participate in an activity. This activity would make them understand how a learning disabled student feels and learns in a general education classroom environment. In this video, he stated that if a learning disabled student can’t take notes off the board, they should be given a handout of the notes. Learning disabled kids sometimes when a teacher is telling them what to write down certain notes, they can’t function and do both things at once. They are trying to listen to the teacher and understand the notes, but they can’t write it down at the same time. Every student, whether with or without a learning disability have to receive the same information, but sometimes LD students need the information in a different way. But this brings up the question of fairness. Is this fair to give an LD students a copy of the notes, while regular students are writing the notes down? In my opinion, this is fair, but I honestly don’t think I would’ve thought of fairness as this way. In this video, he states that fairness is what he or she needs. So yes if a LD students’ needs a copy of the notes because they struggle with taking notes, then yes this is fair. Most teachers probably don’t do this, because they say well that’s not fair to the rest of the class. This outlook on fairness opened my eyes and made me realize if a students need extra help, then they should receive the help for them to succeed. I thought of fairness that everyone gets the same amount of help, but after this video I realize I was wrong. As a teacher, I would want to
