Safeguarding is when you protect children and young people from harm and danger it is a multi-stranded concept that reaches beyond basic child protection to incorporate the additional aims of prevent the impairment of children growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision safe and effective safeguarding. The UK Government has defined the term ‘safeguarding children’ as: ‘The process of protecting children from abuse or neglect, preventing impairment of their health and development, and ensuring they are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care that enables children to have optimum life chances and enter adulthood successfully. Likewise there is a difference between risks and hazards. As a hazard is something that can or will cause harm or danger to the child and a risk is a high or low chance that a hazard will occur and be harmful toward the children. An example of a hazard that will occur in a setting will be keeping the cleaning products out in front of the children where they will be able to reach out and grab them this would be a hazard as it has harmful chemicals that could harm the children. A risk would be to take the children across to the park this would be known as a risk as whilst walking to the park the children could maybe hurt themselves however you can still do this risk but try to come up with a strategy such as making sure that there are enough members of staff in ratio with the children.
