Grady Taybron SOC 230 Professor Popp June 17 2015 Stratification Alex Haley once said, "Racism is taught in our society, it is not automatic. It is learned behavior toward persons with dissimilar physical characteristics." There are so many people that face tough hardships such as racism today; this is true no matter what part of the world a person may travel to. Ignorance is the word to describe people who feel as though discriminating and spreading racism is appropriate. In the world today, especially in media, racism is shown freely. Also shown freely, are the structured social inequalities; this is called stratification. There are twelve districts, which are all based around the capital. All the districts have a different level of social class and are known for different things. In the movie, there is an event called The Hunger Games; this event was created due to a rebellion against The Capital. The event was a way to maintain the structure and maintain the power of the Capital. Before the event takes place, each district must give one boy and one girl to participate in the Hunger Games. The Hunger games is nothing more than a battle to the death with only one survivor remaining. The main character, Katniss Everdeen, of district 12, was not initially chosen to be a part of the games; however, she volunteered as tribute to save the life of her little sister, Primrose. Also chosen from district 12 was Peeta Melark. After the selection process, the tributes are sent to The Capital to train. The tributes are taught basic fighting skills and also how to use weapons to prepare them for the ultimate fight. The Hunger Games begin and there is nothing but death from the start. Children die left and right, violence and blood everywhere. Eventually, there are three tributes left: Peeta, Katniss ,and Cato. Cato is killed by the other remaining tributes. The agreement that was previously stated, that there would be two winners selected, was taken back. Katniss decides to take their lives by suicide. Before the two can complete the suicide, they are both announced the winners of the Hunger
