There is no logical reason to accuse Gene of guilty. Gene is innocent because there is no clear, accurate evidence that Gene caused the fall of Finny. Finny says it himself that he himself just lost his balance as stated in the quote, “ “I lost my balance.” ” (91) Who would know it better than the victim? Leper Lepellier is the eyewitness that saw what happened during the scene. He describes the scene in the quote, “ “―sun was shining in my eyes―The two of them looked as black as death standing up there with this fire burning all around them―” ” (94-95) This tells me that he wasn’t able to tell which person was which on the limb because of the sun shining in his eyes.
