Emerald ash borer is an invasive green beetle laying waste to ash trees in the United States and Canada. The borers attack trees by laying eggs on the bark. The serpentine feeding galleries of the larvae inside the bark disrupt the flow of nutrients and water and starve the tree. In just two years, the emerald ash borer has killed 8 to 10 million trees in MI, OH and IN, and it is spreading quickly despite quarantine efforts. There are seven billion ash trees in North America, and within the next few decades, the beetle could kill most of them—a die-off ten times bigger than the one caused by Dutch elm disease.
