Dystocia (abnormal or difficult birth) can be caused by many factors that include uterine problems, a small birth canal, oversized fetus, or even irregular position of the fetus during birth. The most common factor that causes dystocia in cats is a partly delivered kitten. There are some cases where the head of the kitten is sticking out and it is able to breath although to ensure that the kitten will survive it would have to be delivered within 10 to 20 minutes.
