The Battle of the Somme occurred near the Somme River from July 1st to November 1st, 1910. German troops had been holding their ground against British and French troops in trench warfare. Desperate to finally end the war, the Franco-Britain alliance decided to plan a massive offensive in order to break past Germany lines. Under the direction of Douglas Haig, the British deployed heavy artillery in hopes of wreaking havoc, when they could cross “no man’s land” to meet with a helpless Germany. However, this form of bombardment didn’t weaken Germany as well as Haig had hoped so when British troops crossed “no man’s land”, they were unprepared to face Germany’s machine guns.
