How to Crate train a dog? The main purposes of a crate are to help a puppy with learning to be clean in the home. And to provide a place of safety when he needs to rest or when you cannot supervise him. Crate training your puppy should not mean isolating him from the family. The crate should be placed in a room where people pass through or spend a lot of time. Place the crate away from draughts and direct heat, avoid places that are in direct sunlight at certain times of day. Your dog’s crate should be just large enough for him to stand up and turn around in. If your dog is still growing, choose a crate size that will accommodate his adult size. Block off the excess crate space so your dog can’t eliminate at one end and retreat to the other.…show more content…

Continue to crate your dog for short periods from time to time when you’re home so he doesn’t associate crating with being left alone. Don’t you always “crate and leave,” your pup might begin to associate their crating with being alone. Crate them always five to ten minutes immediately prior to leaving. An adult dog can be crated for as long as eight hours on occasion, but daily crating of this length could compromise your dog's mental and physical well-being. Be sure that he's received adequate exercise before a long stay in the crate-at least 30 to 60 minutes. Crating for the night Put your dog in the crate using your regular command and a treat. Initially, it may be a good idea to put the crate in your bedroom or nearby, especially if you have a puppy. Puppies often need to go outside to eliminate during the night, and you’ll want to be able to hear your puppy when he whines to be let outside. Grown up dogs should also be initially kept nearby so they don’t associate the crate with social isolation.
