Overcoming obstacles is a difficult thing to do. It is even harder when it is nothing that you have control over. Patsy Barnes, the main character of the short story,“The Finish of Patsy Barnes,” and Joby, the main character of, “The Drummer boy of Shiloh,” both have similarities such as overcoming obstacles and differences such as what they overcome.
Patsy and Joby both have difficult obstacles to overcome regarding life or death. Patsy Barnes is a young boy with colored skin whose mother is very ill. Patsy already has to start working to support their family as his mother cannot work because of her illness. Working at the stables should help with money and should supply food
