Everyone wishes to live life the right way in order to influence society for the better; unfortunately, this is easier said than done for most people. The writers Thoreau and Emerson attempt to set guidelines for a meaningful and pleasant life in their essays. Although both writers have similar ideas, Thoreau actually lives out the beliefs at multiple points in his life. His actions indubitably represent Emerson’s opinions what it means to contribute to society. The idea of simplicity expressed by Emerson is specifically seen when Thoreau willingly lives in a poorly built home in the woods. He also sells hisq farm for a minimal price, supporting Emerson’s ideas of charity and generosity. Additionally, Thoreau carries out Emerson’s beliefs of unconditional positivity by staying indoors intentionally. It is without a doubt that Thoreau and his actions are representative of the beliefs Emerson urges society to follow.…show more content…
This Buddhist-like attitude is represented ideally by Thoreau’s residency in the wild forest, in which he builds a house, “merely [for] a defence against the rain.” (Thoreau 4). Thoreau evidently does not want to be spoiled by luxury; all he desires is protection or the bare minimum needed for survival. He supports his inclination towards a simple life later in his essay as well as when he proclaims, “An honest man has hardly need to count more than his ten fingers… Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity!” Thus, a man does not need much to survive; only health and a positive attitude.
