Chelsea Harris World Literature I Professor Edwards September 29, 2015 Medea’s conversations with Jason and Creon revealed a lot of details about their individual characters. For starters, despite each of their flaws, all three characters have good intentions in their own way. Medea, although very impulsive, hateful, and vengeful- has a very large and selfless heart. Creon, although cold and narrow-minded, is a very good father and landlord. Jason, although shallow and materialistic, just wants the best for everyone. Medea is first proven to be a fearsome, angry woman with a temper. Creon stated multiple times that he feared her, and that she was a threat to his children and the people of his land. “I’ll speak plainly. I’m afraid of you.…show more content…
While Medea offers solid, emotional reason to why she should not be exiled, he shuts her down very quickly and bluntly, not trying to listen and understand her words and intentions. “Just leave, you fool. I’m tired of struggling with you.”(342). He replies similarly to every statement that Medea makes, with barely any change in tone. However, he reveals the reason he is so relentless to exile her: he just wants to protect his family and land. After Medea asks about her land, he responded: “Yes, that’s what I love the most-after my children”. (338). He shows that he is so relentless to listen to her because he is completely focused on the wellbeing of those he loves the most. The reason for Medea’s hate-filled heart is fully revealed during her conversation with Jason. He had left her for a richer princess, showing his shallow and materialistic character. However, he confessed that he only did it to provide a better life for their family. “My motive was the best- so we’d live well/ and not be poor.”(575-576). He went on to say that he wanted to give more privileged siblings to their children and give them overall a better living experience. Even though his priorities did not make moral sense, he had good
