During the 14th through the 16th century art was a big part of the society. People patronized arts in order to show off their power and supremacy. Bishops envisioned something greater, and began to exert their influence of their supremacy and wealth over church architecture. Moreover through patronizing the arts they wanted to see the glory of God, the beauty of his existence, and in some cases even to glorify their city states. The two major arts created during that time was the Maesta and the Sistine Chapel. The Maesta existed to glorify the government of Siena while the Sistine Ceiling existed to glorify Christianity and the Pope’s power. Both of these masterpieces were created during a different time periods, and depicted a different aspect of Christianity. Both of these artworks were centered around religion, however both are based on different religious ideals. The Maesta was painted by Duccio, is arguably by far the greatest panel painting that has been ever produced. The narrative panels seemed bewildering in their abundance and inventiveness. Duccio, through his artistic abilities was able to extend the possibility of painted narratives. Both the fame of the Maesta was able to attract large number of pilgrims to Siena, and Duccio’s influence as a great artist had an impact on the Sienese art. Although Sienna was a religious society, their religious arts had a political meaning to it as well. Through their paintings they wanted to impress the people and show off their pride for the city. Duccio was known as the most famous painter, and his art was influence mostly by the Byzantine Empire. His paintings was in tempera, a powdered pigments typically mixed with egg yolk on a wood panel.
