In William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, persuasion is used by many characters. Brutus and Portia both have different styles of speaking when it comes to convincing a person. However, Portia is the better speaker. She persuades Brutus with techniques such as using reasoning, evidence and her words. In an example of her use of words, Portia says, “ I shouldn’t have too, if you were gentle” (Shakespeare 2.1.292). By verbally abusing Brutus when she is told not to kneel and calling him ungentle this causes him to feel guilty for not telling her. Using reason and evidence she tells Brutus that “ By the bonds of marriage...there should be no secrets”(Shakespeare 2.1.293-294).
