Artists Artemisia Gentileschi and Frida Kahlo are examples of artists who convey similar emotions such as aggression, suffering and self-vulnerability through their numerous artworks in various ways which provoke and generate responses from the audience. It can be seen through the detailed and precise techniques used in their artworks and their main intentions during its creation. Gentileschi’s artworks, ‘Susanna and the Elders’ 1610 and ‘Judith Slaying Holofernes (Naples version)’ 1598-1599’ both exemplify ideas related to the significant events that affected her life and display her feelings during the situations. Frida Kahlo’s self-portraits, ‘Henry Ford Hospital’ created in 1932, ‘The Two Fridas’ 1939 and ‘Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace…show more content… ‘Susanna and the Elders’ is an example of her work that generated responses and discussions on how Susanna was represented. The artwork depicts the biblical story of Susanna who was a virtuous young wife sexually harassed by the elders of her community. Many male artists had interpreted and painted the scene with Susanna as coy or flirtatious however Artemisia presents the female perspective and portrays her as vulnerable, frightened, and displaying her refusal to the demands of the men, while they are shown as intimidating, leering and menacing towards her. It can be seen through Susanna’s body language that she is clearly taking a defensive or protective stance against the approach of the men, particularly evident in the placement of her arms above her head and how she is the dominant single figure. The painting may reflect the sexual harassment she received from Tassi and other artists at the time when she began training at his studio. This reflection of Artemisia through Susanna allows the audience to view the situation through her perspective promoting feelings of empathy thus creating a connection between artist and audience. This representation of Susanna as the victim in this artwork raises issues regarding male dominance over women and conveys the vulnerable feelings and exploitation that are felt which may be relatable especially towards the female
