Cohabitation is a trend in the US that has become very popular recently. Cohabitation has emerged as a new family form as well as a transitional lifestyle choice. Instead of marriage, people are moving into cohabitation as a first union. (Professor Schramm, chapter one, 2015). Couples who live together and are emotionally and intimately involved are engaging in cohabitation. There are many positive and negative effects that can be resulted from cohabitation. In my opinion, cohabitation is becoming more and more common that people in this society think it’s just so normal to live with someone before getting married and they don’t think about the various effects that can come from it. People who engage in cohabitation tend to share the same characteristics. On average, compared to daters with plans to marry, those cohabiting with plans to marry tend to be older, have less education, have had more sexual partners, are more likely to have divorced partners, experienced more conflict in their families growing, have more favorable attitudes toward divorce and less favorable attitudes toward marriage, are less religious, and are less traditional. (Professor Schramm, chapter six, 2015). About half of people that are dating agree that their religious beliefs suggest that it is wrong for people to live together without being married. “Researchers have found that many couples slide into living together, saying it “just happened” (Rhoades & Stanley, 2014) rather than making decisions about living together. Once they slide into cohabitation the couple may find that they are suddenly sharing a living space, having to make large purchases together, and maybe even end up raising a child together.
