Hello, I'm here to talk about childhood obesity specifically in America. Did you know that 1 out of every 3 children in America are considered overweight or obese? To officially be considered overweight you must be within the 85th and 95th percentile for body mass index for your age and gender. To officially be considered obese you must be greater than the 95th percentile for body mass index for your age and gender. Body mass index, or BMI for short, is a number based on your height and weight that is used to determine the amount of fat in your body. There are many factors that affect this childhood obesity epidemic in America. Leading causes for childhood obesity in America include the increased use of television, tablets, phones, and computers,…show more content… The increased use of technology is a main factor in childhood obesity. Nowadays, kids spend an average of 7 hours of screen time on their phones, computers, tablets, and watching television. Some of this screen time can be productive, but the problem occurs when kids are spending excessive amounts of unproductive time on technology, instead of using that time for human interaction or play. It is estimate that for every 1 hour of television viewing, a child consumes an extra 167 calories. Another leading cause of childhood obesity is the lack of a healthy diet. This can be caused by being unaware of what your buying. Next time you go to the grocery store, try to look at the labels and find food labeled non-gmo, or organic. The lack of a healthy diet can also be caused by kids not making healthy lunch choices while at school, which I'm sure we all can relate to. As well, people can alter their diets. Instead of thinking of a diet as a restriction of certain foods, think of it as a balance and moderation of all the main food groups. For example, instead of not eating as much, try eating a more diverse meal that includes, fruit, veggies, grains, and meat, and make sure everything is in moderation. Also, try and spend at least 60 minutes a day doing something active such as playing a sport, running around, or even finding something active to do inside like a fitness program. As well, you can donate money to charities such as HealthCorps, who go to schools, lunchrooms, and after school clubs all across America to educate children on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
