Persuasion In the British novel, Persuasion, Jane Austen writes about the Elliot family’s lifestyle in England and how each member interacts with the other characters through out the novel. Austen illustrates how change can generate additional change by the use of symbolism and narration. She develops a satirical tone in order to illustrate how changes in the Elliot’s lives accelerate further changes. Austen’s novel Persuasion, dates back to England’s early 1800s. The main focus of the story is the protagonist characters, the Elliot family. There is Anne Elliot, Elizabeth Elliot, Mary Elliot Musgrove, and the girl’s father, Sir Walter Elliot. Sir Walter is a self-centered baronet, dedicated father, widower, and an impractical upperclassman.…show more content…

(34) In this excerpt, Mary and Anne are discussing how their lives will change, since they will not be staying in Kellynch Hall. This example of symbolism builds the theme that change can generate additional change because Kellynch Hall is used to symbolize power. Lady Elliot’s death altered Sir Walter and the girl’s life significantly. The death caused Sir Walter to become unstable and unable to pay his mortgage, which forces him to rent the property and give a bit of his wealth and power
