Bronx Masquerade by Nikki Grimes is the recipient of the 2003 Coretta Scott King Author Award. Bronx Masquerade is the story of a high school English class in the Bronx, New York. During a lesson about Langston Hughes and poetry, one student gets up and recites a poem to his class. After this moment, students began to use poetry to expresses their pain, happiness, and overall opinions. In their poems topics such as abuse, friendships, and escaping from reality. Bronx Masquerade is an award-winning text because it depicts children in a negative situation doing good things.
