Bilbo Baggins was a very basic and unimpressive Hobbit. As Bilbo grows to carve adventure, he discovers some positive qualities about himself that will aide in his future endeavors. Bilbo demonstrates wit while put smarting Gollum in the tunnels. In chapter five Bilbo uses a riddle to get past Gollum, the riddle reads; This thing all things devours: Birds, beasts, trees, flowers; Gnaws iron, bites steel; Grinds hard stones to meal; Slays king, ruins towns, And beats high mountain down. Second, Bilbo demonstrates bravery by bailing the dwarves and himself out of multiple situations. An example of one of these situations is when Bilbo fights off the spiders in chapter eight.
