What is the impact of pesticides on bees? Assessment of the degree of toxicity of pesticides to bees requires clarification, should include the toxicity of the active ingredients and the toxicity of metabolites formed during decomposition of the active substance of pesticide. Metabolites often tend to be more damaging to bees than the active substance itself (Maxim & Arnold, 2013). Bees gather food that in the honeycomb linger for longer period of time - up to several months. These stocks are then used by bees, and then metabolites have the opportunity to reveal its malicious activity causing lethal effect. This concerns mainly the young bees, which feed exclusively on the food gathered in the nest. All aspects of sublethal toxicity as a…show more content…
In one of the reports on the impact of pesticides on bees we read that the need to secure survival based on pollen containing an average of seven different residues of pesticides, must entail negative consequences.(Mullin et al., 2010). Based on the available scientific evidence Greenpeace has identified the seven most harmful to bees of insecticides, whose use should be limited and which should be eliminated from the environment in order to inhibit their negative impact on bees and other wild pollinators. This list contains imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, clothianidin, fipronil, chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin and deltamethrin (Greenpeace International, 2015). The above-mentioned chemicals are widely used in Europe. As shown, at high concentrations, they exhibit a strong negative impact on bees. Scientific evidence shows clearly and unambiguously that damages resulting from the use of these pesticides definitely outweigh any anticipated benefits conditions resulting from increased yields attained by the role they play in protecting against pests. Risks associated with the use of some of these pesticides has been confirmed by the European Food Safety Authority in a report published in 2013 (Efsa.europa.eu,
