216 Words1 Page
Have you ever stopped and wondered every time you pick up a cigarette, if it’s was going to be your last one? If not you should stop and think now. Cigarettes contain over 7,000 chemicals, 69 of those are known as cancer-causing chemical compounds and 400 other toxins. About half of cigarette smokers die of tobacco-related diseases, and lose 14 years or more of their life. Cigarettes used by pregnant women also have been shown to cause birth defects, including low birth weight, fetal abnormalities, and premature birth. Second-hand smokers have been shown to be injurious to bystanders, which has led to legislation that has prohibited smoking in many workplaces and public areas. Smoking kills more than 480,000 people in the U.S. each year.
