A lawful order is an order set by the Commisioned Officers that all soldiers are expected to follow. They can be found everywhere you look in the Army. Some examples include the Oath of Enlistment and all soldiers vowing to protect the country from any foreign or domestic threat and the Non Commisioned Officers' creed and their vow to provide outstanding leadership to the junior enlisted soldiers. These lawful orders are passed down from the Officers who are appointed to lead and down through the ranks. The role of the Commisioned Officers is to lead, and train Soldiers. These orders include the current task and timeline to accomplish a mission, or, in a combat environment, the orders may include the rules of engagement and outline of the plan for evacuation and all communication information. This information is critical and if it is not relayed correctly and not followed by the soldiers, the mission could end with massive amounts of casualties that could have been avoided. This information is normally relayed in the Commanders' intent and passed on the Non Commisioned Officers who then gather the best qualified junior enlisted Soldiers for the task and relay the information to that group. This involves Officers relaying orders to the Non Commissioned Officers and the orders then being distributed to the junior enlisted Soldiers. In a peacetime environment, this can be anything from cleaning up after chow to doing a physical fitness test. The Commander issues an order to the First Sergeant. The First Sergeant then passes the information to the Platoon Sergeants. Then it's passed down to the team leaders and individual Soldiers who all work together to accomplish the goal. The Non Commisioned Officers supervise, help, and direct the Soldiers in each of the tasks and ensure it's completion. When the task is done, the Soldiers report it to the NCOs and the information makes its way back up the chain of command until it gets back to the Commander. These critical tasks are completed by available soldiers who have not been tasked out. When orders are not followed according to the Commander’s intent and the order was passed down to the Soldiers, Non Commisioned Officers are then in charge of disciplinary action. These actions can range from verbal punishment to physical training to UCMJ action by use of an Article 92. Verbal disciplinary action can be taken in the form of corrective counseling statements or verbally telling a soldier how and where they messed up. Physical forms of disciplinary action would be given to a Soldier for knowledgeable negligence or failure to correct a behavior mentioned
